Picking the Best Paint Color To Sell Your HomeYou’re selling your home and time is of the essence. Your real estate professional has suggested that you might want to repaint your daughter’s pink bedroom, or the dark blue feature wall in the hall or the red walls in your husband’s basement man-cave.

But it’s only paint, right? It’s not broken windows or doors hanging off the hinges or an outdated bathroom. Things that really put buyers off. It’s only paint! Surely people coming to see your home for sale can look beyond the paint.

Sadly, many can’t. Many potential buyers lack imagination or they’re not visual people. That’s why home stagers want you to hide personal items when getting your home ready to sell. Buyers want to picture themselves living in your home. And no matter how beautiful or striking the walls in your home might be, if people can’t picture themselves in your home because the walls are distracting that’s not good for you. Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes.

If you read nothing else in this blog post, read this. White, beige or grey. A flat white paint on the ceiling, flat beige walls and white semi-gloss paint on the trim. That’s all you need to know if you’re selling your home and you are wondering what colour to paint your walls.

Neutral Colour Is Non Offensive

You can’t presume that a potential buyer has the same colour preferences as you. Your personal taste is not in question here. Your walls might be painted in cooler tones but half of the buyers out there like warm colours.  Neutral colours go with anything. Nothing is as versatile as plain, classic colours. They go with light wood, dark wood and all furniture types. The only possible exception to this rule is when a home is empty or sparsely furnished. A too-white home might look stark. Walls with a wee bit of colour to them will create warmth in the absence of anything else in the home.

Flat Paint Can Hide Imperfections

Even a white or beige paint in an eggshell or satin will draw attention to texture differences on your ceiling or walls. These paints reflect the light so if a buyer walks into a room and the light hits that patch on the wall you just plastered and sanded, it’s going to stick out like a sore thumb. A flat paint is a concealing paint. The exceptions are kitchens and bathrooms. A shiny or glossy paint says “hey, I’m washable”.

Semi Gloss For Trim And Doors

Tough and washable semi-gloss is best for door trim, baseboards and doors themselves. Hand prints, scuff marks from moving objects in and out of the room and dragging the vacuum cleaner around can make trim dirty. Keep the paint colour on the trim the same on the ceilings. This will make the walls stand out.

Using Chalkboard Paint in the Home

If you know anything about decorating you know chalkboard paint is all the rage these days. One of the main reasons it has become so popular is because of how easy it is to work with. It also comes in a variety of different colours which means you have a lot of freedom to be as creative as you want to be.

But that's not all, chalkboard paint can adhere to almost anything, it requires very little preparation, it’s easy to clean and it has a decent lifespan. If you are interested in decorating your home with chalkboard paint, get started today and discover the creativity and utility this paint can offer.

Painting In The Most Cost Effective Way

You may have avoided painting and spending money prior to selling your home, but you can keep the cost down by keeping the paint all one colour. White, beige or grey. The price for one uniform colour is cheaper than using multiple colours or creating custom colours.   You don’t need as many brushes, rollers and paint trays, too.  Painting will help sell your home faster. Even painting over walls that are already white can make your home seem brighter and cleaner.
