West Edmonton Mall

There are malls and then there's the West Edmonton Mall and until you've been here you really won't have any idea what "huge" actually means. This mall was first founded by two immigrant brothers in 1959 and remained the biggest mall in the entire world until 2004. In fact even today this mall ranks as the single biggest anywhere in Canada or the United States and is still one of the 10th largest malls in the entire world!

So how big is it really? How about a mall that covers over 6,000,000 (6 million) square feet, has in excess of 800 different stores and with enough parking space for 20,000 vehicles? The West Edmonton Mall employs more than 23,000 people, which is just enough to keep the place running and to deal with the 100,000 daily shoppers that drop by here.

But is the mall just about shopping? Not at all and from a social point of view West Edmonton Mall has lots and lots to offer any family. Obviously the shopping is going to be enough to keep any parent happy, with something to appeal to every taste. And when you're tired from shopping you can drop into any of the multi-screen movie theaters in the mall too or just stop off at any of the many fantastic restaurants here to enjoy a bite to eat and a break for your feet.

To be fair despite the fact that the shopping in this mall is amazing it's the other attractions here that make it really stand out. Things like the biggest indoor roller coaster in the world, a water park with a massive swimming pool, a full-blown laser tag arena, a skating rink, mini golf course and there's even a marine life exhibit here too. The marine exhibit has 100 different types of fish, sea turtles, sharks, penguins and reptiles to view and a hugely popular attraction are the 4 Californian sea lions at Sea Lions Rock.

West Edmonton Mall is more than just a days shopping for the family - it's part holiday and part family day out.
