Leaving the city and heading for the countryside means you get to discover plenty of new areas. Fort Saskatchewan is one of those areas. You will find all kinds of fun here and it's just 25 kilometres to the northeast of Edmonton.
You may have heard that this area is only about free-roaming sheep. Even though you are likely going to see some sheep, Fort Saskatchewan is about far more. Here's what you will find after you take the short drive to the countryside.
The Kin Family Spray Park is a huge draw, especially if you have younger children. This is a great place to play and cool off during the summer.
You will also find more than 30 kilometres of paved trails for walking, jogging, biking and running. The area is also home to a golf course, plenty of historic sites and so much more.
Spend time at the Harbour pool, which is an indoor pool complete with a hot tub, sauna and side. Maybe you prefer to stay active inside. You can do this at the Dow Centennial Centre, which includes a gymnasium, ice rink, fitness centre, fieldhouse and indoor track.
If you're up for a show, the centre provides plenty of performing arts events. It's also home to a permanent art gallery.
Along with the many activities found throughout Fort Saskatchewan, there are also plenty of events held here every year. They hold regular Movie Under the Stars events at Legacy Park. You can enjoy the Sheep Leaving Parade every September and there are plenty of other events providing year-round fun.
Whether you come for the historic downtown or for one of the many other places to see and things to do, a trip to Fort Saskatchewan should be on your list for family fun.
