Carlisle is one of the residential neighborhoods that make up the highly desirable Castle Down’s area, which is notable for naming its neighborhoods after famous European castles. The community is bounded by 137th Avenue to the north, 113A Street to the east, 145th Avenue to the south, and 124th Street to the west. The land Carlisle was developed on was annexed to Edmonton City in 1971.

Just like the other neighborhoods in the area, Carlisle follows the area’s naming tradition, being named in honor of Carlisle Castle in the UK, just south of the border between England and Scotland. King William II constructed the castle back in 1093. Later, the castle underwent several major renovations through the years and as of today; it is one of England’s best preserved castles.

Carlisle Homes for Sale in Edmonton

Major development of Carlisle in Edmonton began in the early 1970s, at a time when the city saw a significant construction boom. Construction went on at a rapid pace well into the 1980s, later slowing down somewhat and finally ending in the early 2000s. Today, the neighborhood is considered to be complete, with no further plans for development.

The majority of homes here are located in the vicinity of Collector Road, and can be described as multi-family homes. Other types of residences in the area include row houses, duplexes, and rented apartments. Two-thirds of the residences are owner occupied, while the remaining one-third is renter occupied.

Carlisle is dominated by extensive parklands, offering excellent outdoor recreation opportunities for residents. Much of the parkland is located in the center of the neighborhood, as is the main elementary school, St. Timothy Catholic Elementary School, and community league center. The Carlisle Community League offers various recreational activities to residents.

For shopping and entertainment, residents never have to travel too far, for there are many retail outlets scattered around the neighborhood, including restaurants, pubs, grocery stores and other establishments. Carlisle doesn’t have any malls, however there are several bus stops in the neighborhood that offer residents a quick and easy route into the city center.
