Kiniski Gardens Edmonton Real Estate

Millward's encompasses 27 neighborhoods in total, but few are as beautiful as the neighborhood of Kiniski Gardens. Centered in the Burnewood area, Mill Woods was first established in 1970 by the Government of Alberta. The area was named Mill Woods because it was built atop of Mill Creek, an area of Forest and groves that intersect the area. The city of Edmonton purchased the land in 1970, and then immediately set about subdividing the land for sale into residential and commercial lots.

Kiniski Gardens is a triangle shaped area, bounded to the east by 34th Street. To the north-west of the area runs a pipeline utility corridor, while the South West is bounded by the Mill Creek Ravine. Construction at Kiniski Gardens didn't begin until the middle of the decade, continuing until the mid-1990s.

There are a variety of housing types in Kiniski Gardens, although the vast majority are single-family dwellings (95%). The remainder is made up of low-rise apartment buildings and duplexes. The area is considered to be a very desirable place to live, hence 89% of residents are owner occupiers with only 11% being renters.

There are two schools located within the neighborhood, as well as several parks. Mill Creek Ravine provides a large natural recreational area, and there are a couple of smaller parks in the centre of the neighborhood as well. Along 50th and 34th streets, there are a number of small businesses and convenience shops.

Kiniski Gardens takes its name from a celebrated local female politician called Julia Kiniski, who was admired for never giving up – she ran for the position of City Alderman 10 times without success, before finally succeeding at the 11th attempt in 1963. Kiniski was affectionately nicknamed big Julie, and her successive failures somehow managed to reawaken public interest in the city Council and its affairs. Following her first success in 1963, Kiniski was re-elected three times after.
