Minchau is part of a three neighborhood community known as Ridgewood, and is also a part of the larger Mill Woods residential zone, which consists of a total of twenty-eight neighborhoods. This neighborhood was given its name to honor August Minchau, an immigrant from Poland, who settled in the Mill Woods area during the late 19th century.

Residential developments first commenced here sometime between years 1961 to 1970, and were marked with the creation of the first twenty abodes. Urbanization significantly increased during the next two decades after 1971, decreased shortly after, and then seized completely after reaching completion.

With a little over 1,000 residential units, most of the residents today live in single-detached homes, which are estimated to comprise approximately 68% percent of the total number of houses within the compound. The second most popular home type is the row house (12%), followed by the low-rise apartment (11%), and the semi-detached abode (9%).

Within the property are a multipurpose school, and a recreational site along the Mill Creek Ravine. That being said, the Mill Creek Ravine serves as a boundary for the neighborhood’s north east side, while 50 Street borderlines the west side, and 50 Street at the south.

Though Minchau may not have as many amenities as other neighborhoods in the city, it’s ideally positioned near a number of commercial establishments, educational institutions, and other places that can provide the basic necessities for its residents.

One of the closest malls to this Minchau is the Mill Woods Town Centre, which is approximately a seven-minute drive from the neighborhood. The second nearest is the South Edmonton Common, which is roughly fourteen minutes away. For those who like watching the latest movies on the big screen, the Cinema Odeon (5kms away) and the Magic Lantern Princess Cinema (8kms) are both within very close proximity of the neighborhood.
