In 1912, North zone became a part of north 123rd Avenue Edmonton and the southern area joined a year later. This happened due to the  growth of the city of Edmonton that was taking place back in 1900s.

This neighbourhood of Edmonton, was named after Reverend William Newton back in 1875. In the same year, he constructed a church and hospital nearby 10 Km east of Fort Edmonton, afterwards due to his great efforts to improve the city and help other residents, the members of the town decided to change the name of the neighbourhood to Newton.

Unlike other neighbourhoods of Edmonton residential areas in Newton took several decades to develop. Along with the Town Of Beverly in 1947, the southeast region of Newton had urbanized widely and swiftly. The development of the southwestern zone of Newton continued until the late 1990s and has had an increased number of residencies move into the area.
