Garage OrganizationThe snow has been gone for a little while and the summer is really here. It is time to start thinking of how to reorganize that garage that you have been putting off since last summer.

Summer is the time that your garage is going to be used the most. The mountain bikes are in and out as are the golf clubs, the soccer gear and quite a bit of other outdoor items.

Develop a Structured Organization Plan

Take a good look at the layout of your garage in order to develop a plan of organization. Categorize your belongings based on how often you use the items, how accessible it needs to be, or by the type of item it is. You can use categories, such as lawn care items, sports equipment, and tools, or you can place your most used items in a convenient location that is easy to access.

Look at the layout of your entire space, and consider how you can use your space to your advantage. When you make an organized plan, it will become much easier for you to find your belongings when you need them. Use your space wisely, and have a plan that is easy to follow for everyone in your home to keep the space from being cluttered.

Organizing your Garage

The best thing to do when you are first starting to organize your garage is sort through your belongings. Use three categories: keep, donate and trash. Go through your items with the entire family to make sure that no one has their beloved childhood toy thrown out.

After you have looked at what is being kept, or not you will want to further organize these into a trash or donate pile. If you think someone can use it, put it in the donate pile and contact a local group like Big Brothers or take your items to a thrift store.

Make Use of Overhead Storage

In many garages, you have limited space to store gear as you have cars in the garage that are also in and out. Overhead storage is your answer to these problems. Overhead storage works really well for items that you need access to, but you don't use every day. These items might include:

  • Family memoirs
  • Items your kids don't use, but may use when they get older
  • Holiday decorations
  • Snow gear
  • And other items you don't use as much in the summer months

Organizing your garage is a stressful process, but if you sort everything and utilize overhead storage it will be done quickly. Then, you can get back to enjoying the great weather during the summer in Edmonton.
