New Year's Eve 2019 in Edmonton will certainly not go by unnoticed, as the community will be ringing in the new year with fun festivals and spectacular fireworks across the city. Here are a few annual traditions that thrill seekers can look forward to in Edmonton.
Downtown Festival and Fireworks—Federal Building and Capital Plaza
This is by far the biggest and best Edmonton New Year's Eve event that brings in thousands of attendees annually. Inside the Federal Building during the day there will be tons of family friendly activities such as games, competitions, crafts, roving performers and live music. Food trucks will also be plentiful all day downtown.
At Capital Plaza, there will be several performances on the main stage alongside fire pits, bannock making stations and ice carving ventures. After dark, a pyro-musical fireworks show will ring in the new year with a blast at the Alberta legislature grounds. This event also is live-streamed on Facebook, so one can even catch the action from the comfort of home.
The New Year's Eve Event at Churchill Square
If you're looking for something other than a bar/club event, the New Year's Eve event at Sir Winston Churchill Square may be the perfect choice. You can enjoy brining in the New Year with family and friends. This event includes an open fire, hot chocolate, fireworks and more! It's even a free event.
Noon Year's Eve—Telus World of Science
This event ensures that parents have no excuse to not let their kiddos have a special New Year's Eve celebration. Head to the Telus World of Science on the eve of the new year and January 1, to enjoy a two day event filled with unique daytime activities that don't require staying up until midnight. Events include a unique presentation of ‘fireworks,' and kids of all ages go wild for chemistry experiments that involve tasting candy can liquid nitrogen ice cream. There's no need to make a reservation, and tickets are available online at the regular admission price.
Heritage Park Family Fest
Bundle up the family and head out to the New Year's Eve Family Fest at Heritage Park in Stony Plain. Admission to this event is free, but guests are encouraged to bring non-perishable donations that will go to the local food bank. The Heritage Park Family Fest boasts an array of craft and food vendors, live entertainment, ice skating and thrilling horse drawn wagon rides. Fireworks kick off just after dusk, making this an ideal festival for the whole family.
Strathcona County New Year's Eve
Around mid-afternoon, festivities kick off at Broadmoor Lake Park, Sherwood Park, Sports Centre and Festival Place to start ringing in the new year. Strathcona County New Year's Eve promises free sleigh rides, seasonal crafts, a Hockey Circus Show and sweet treats and drinks to keep the adrenaline going.
After some cocoa, visitors can challenge friends and family with snow-loving activities such as ice skating, snowshoeing, indoor snowboarding and remote control bobsledding events. Soak in the beauty of the outdoor ice sculptures while heading to Broadmoor Lake Park for an early fireworks show.
McDougall United Church New Year's Eve Concert
Bring in the new year with some soul soothing music from the esteemed choir at McDougall Unite Church. There will be an array of talent at this live concert New Year's eve tradition with favourites like the Back Porch Swing, the Edmonton City Fiddlers and many more. Activities for kids will be happening in the church basement all afternoon and evening, and the day also includes ample refreshments and goodies for everyone. Non-perishable food donations are highly encouraged in lieu of admission.
