Edmonton’s Rice Theatre Transformed Into Cabaret Venue

When businesses undergo structural redevelopments in an attempt to repurpose it into something that caters for different crowds, the bold move is usually met with massive success or humiliating failure. With that said, the Rice Theatre situated in the Citadel is one establishment within Edmonton that has been restructured into something locals should get a kick out of – a downtown club and cabaret venue.

This theatre also sports a brand new name, The Club, and is expected to attract a wider range of customers to the venue. Scheduled to open this weekend, guests of this soon-to-be destination hotspot get to enjoy a diversity of entertainment formats, such as musical jazz performances, standup comedy shows, a theatre master class, a theatre forum, after-show jams performed by Citadel’s cast, dance parties, and of course, cabarets.

While the cabaret style of entertainment has yet to find a home within this theatre town, Susan Gilmour is popularly known to many as a master of these types of musical performances, and so happens to be the singer/actress hired to launch Beyond the Stage this Saturday as a major component of Alberta Culture Days.

Gilmour won’t be returning to the stage alone though – along for the ride is renowned pianist Randy Mueller, where the two (as well as other actors) will be performing a variety of cabarets, such “I Dreamed a Dream.”

“It’s a journey with me, through my life,” said the Edmonton-born performer. When asked about her opinions on the actual stage, and whether the Rice Theatre’s transformation was suitable to her preferences, she replied: “I’ve worked in all kinds of cabaret spaces. Reinvented with tables on various levels, the new Rice has exactly the right “casual, relaxing atmosphere. I hope it will be a viable and vibrant venue for Edmonton.”

The locals couldn’t be more excited to see Gilmour entertaining them in a revamped theater. Proof of their enthusiasm to see her show is clearly reflected in the fact that all tickets were sold out in advance for Saturday’s show.

Moreover, other entertainers, such as cabaret artist Patricia Zentilli and Don Horsburgh, are also scheduled for future performances.
