The residential construction in this area began after the end of World War II, around 1946 and 1960. More than sixty per cent of the buildings constructed during that period still stand to this day and have just been remodeled and renovated to keep the historical value of the buildings. The town mostly is comprised of single-family dwellings; there are also a few duplexes, row houses and low-rise apartments in the area. Predominantly, Mayfield's has a modified grid street pattern that became popular after the war. This allowed a concentrated construction of commercial developments that are located at the corner of 111th Avenue and 156 Street.
Regional shopping centers are situated along Stony Plain Road & Mayfield road, which are all easily accessible from the residential areas. There is barely any traffic in Mayfield, even though it is bounded by several major roadways. The landscape boulevards along 107 Avenue, and the Mayfield Road serves as a traffic and noise buffer.
The heart of the district consists of both the central schools and park sites. These are strategically located within the vicinity of the residential areas, which provides easy access for the families that live nearby. The parks that are also deliberately scattered around are the Mayfield Park, Patrick J. Ryan Park, Otto Leslie Park and the Phoebe Mccullough Park. Residents often find themselves relaxing in the Mayfield Inn and Suites. This inn sometimes host contemporary and modern theatre, which is greatly enjoyed by the people of Mayfield.
The schools in the area are The Our Lady of Peace Elementary School and the Mayfield Elementary School. The Edmonton Public School System and the Edmonton Catholic School System separately manage these 2 schools.
