By the 1950s, the construction of the residential area in this community was well under way. In the 1980s, most of McLeod was already developed. Just like a lot of suburban communities during its time, the use of land in this community is mainly dedicated to residential use. What is unique about McLeod is that practically all of the residential properties that were built were single detached housing. Many of these homes were constructed in the 1960s.
The community of McLeod was named in honor of Murdoch McLeod. He was an early pioneer in the area and was originally from Scotland. When he arrived in Canada, in 1861 he joined the Hudson Bay Company. McLeod spent six years in the Arctic and in Manitoba where he was a Riel Rebellion prisoner. In 1879 he moved to Edmonton and did farming in the area of Belmont.
McLeod Neighbourhood Amenities
The layout of McLeod is traditional of the subdivisions created during the 1960s. The streets are designed in cul-de-sacs and crescents and the residential lots are generous in size. In a lot of the communities, schools are located at the center. The four schools in the neighbourhood of McLeod are located by the southeast perimeter of the neighbourhood. In this area of the community, the park and school sites service the children residing in McLeod as well as those in the nearby communities like Casselman, located to the east of McLeod.
McLeod School Information
The schools in the neighbourhood consist of McLeod Elementary School, Steele Heights Junior High School, St. Dominic Catholic Elementary School, and J.J Bowlen Catholic Junior High School. Other notable places include the McLeod Community League, Steele Heights Baptist Church, and St. Dominic Savior Parish. There are also numerous bus stations in McLeod that help residents easily get around the community.
