Garneau Homes & Real Estate - Southwest Edmonton

Welcome to your best Garneau neighbourhood Southwest Edmonton real estate resource. Among the oldest neighbourhoods in the inner city, Garneau was developed when it was incorporated into Edmonton in 1912. It used to be part of Strathcona City. Since that incorporation, further development of the community has been catalyzed by the continuous expansion of the nearby University of Alberta. The continuing development of the Whyte Avenue commercial area is also a significant factor for the important changes in its residential landscape. Garneau Real Estate Market

The neighbourhood has numerous high-rise condominiums and low-rise apartment buildings. Unlike in many other communities in the city, most dwellings in Garneau are rented instead of inhabited by owners. This is also logical since the area is an attractive location for renters, which are often students who go to the University of Alberta. Interestingly, there are still several French inspired old homes that can be found in the community, which is to be expected because of the Metis history in the area.

Garneau Community History

The neighbourhood was named after Laurent Garneau, who was noted not just for his Metis descent but also for his active participation in local politics. He was also an early settler of the area. Mr. Garneau was part of the Red River Colony in Manitoba. In 1869, he participated in the Red River uprising (instrumental in the formation in 1870 of Manitoba), which was headed by Louis Riel.

Garneau Community Amenities

University housing units for students as well as fraternity residences are commonly found in the northwest of the neighbourhood. The community has numerous commercial businesses that are constructed along Whyte Avenue, 109 Street, and 112 Street. Many businesses and services can be accessed within Garneau or in the nearby Old Strathcoma. The popular Garneau Theatre is within the area. Additionally, residents enjoy better, faster, and easier access to many important areas in the city, including North Saskatchewan River Valley and Downtown through Walterdale Bridges and High Level.
