Calder Homes & Real Estate - Northwest Edmonton

Welcome to your top Calder homes for sale and Northwest Edmonton real estate source. Calder’s early development was connected to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway construction and the Hudson’s Bay Company Reserve development. The HBC hoped to gain from the increasing realty prices in pre-World War I Edmonton, so they delayed the development and sale of about 1,600 acres of the area in the Reserve. Calder Real Estate Market

From 1945 to 1956, the population of Edmonton doubled and the development of communities such as Calder continued. The prolonged development period of Calder is noticeable in the age of the buildings in the area. Many of the pre-1950 structures in Calder go back the subdivision years of 1905, 1909, as well as 1910.

From 1960, many more structures were built, and some of these buildings replaced the ones built prior to the war. Many of the newer buildings are situated in the north part of the community, while the oldest ones can be found by the Calder Railway Yards. Most of the residences in the neighbourhood consist of single family housing, while the minority consists of duplexes and rented apartments.

Stretching across from 107th Avenue to 122nd Avenue north to south, and 101st Street to 121st Street east to west, this area of empty land hinders the regular expansion of the city. Development started to jump over the Reserve while a number of small subdivisions developed around its boundary and just out of city limits.

Calder Community Amenities

The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway was established in the city in 1909. Shortly after finishing the rail link with Edmonton, the Grand Trunk located its shunting yards by 127th Avenue, away from the Reserve. In July 1910, Calder, or the Village of West Edmonton, was developed. Numerous Grand Trunk workers inhabited Calder and this resulted in the neighbourhood being recognized as a railroad colony. In 1913, the land to Calder’s east was annexed by Edmonton, and in 1917, Calder was annexed by Edmonton as well.

Calder Community Center stands in the middle of the neighbourhood, while there are various churches and restaurants servicing residents as well.

Calder School Information

Two schools are situated in the Calder community, which are Calder Elementary School and the St. Edmund Catholic Elementary Junior High School.
