The neighborhood takes its name from Cumberland House, the first inland trading post of Hudson’s Bay Company. Located in the Palisades Plan Area, the land on which the community stands today was primarily used for agricultural cultivation. Residential development didn’t really kick off until the 1990s, making this neighborhood one of the newest in Edmonton.

During the early 1990s, a total of twenty houses were built. From the period of 1996 to 2000, urban development significantly increased with the construction of over 400 dwellings. Urbanization continued to grow in the succeeding years, and eventually reached its peak during the early 2000s.

As of the present, there are more than 1,400 residential units in Cumberland, the vast majority of which (91%) is comprised of single family dwellings. The second most common home type is the row house, which comprises 8% of the total number. In addition, there is a very small number of mobile homes in the community. The neighborhood is overwhelmingly owner-occupied, with 92% of all residents owning their homes compared to just 8% who rent.

For recreation, one of Cumberland’s standout features is its 5.66 hectare park located in the northeast, which provides families and residents with a wealth of opportunities to enjoy outdoor leisure pursuits. Another prominent outdoor space is the natural tree stand south of 150 Avenue. In addition to this, a storm management facility can be found at the center of the neighborhood – this amenity also functions as a small lake and has many single-detached homes built around it, thereby improving the aesthetic value of Cumberland’s overall design.

Embodied by the 153 Avenue to the north, 127 Street to the east, 142 Street on the west, and Cumberland Road at the south, this neighborhood is close to a variety of amenities that can cater to the service and entertainment needs of its residents.

Proximate commercial establishments of relative significance include the following: Northgate Centre, Cineplex Odeon, Londonderry Child Development Society, St. Angela Catholic School, Commonwealth Stadium, Royal Alexandra Hospital, and the Edmonton City Centre (Blatchford Field) Airport.
