The first plan for the community was put together in 1984. However, his plan underwent numerous changes to make it fall in line with local stormwater management regulations, to reduce the typical area requirements for park and school locations, and to lessen the portion of land designated to multi-unit homes, a necessary step undertaken by the planners in response to the changing demands of the local real estate market.
Canossa is mainly a single-detached residential neighbourhood, with its homes being situated around loops and a cul-de-sac road design. This was done so that the community resembles those surrounding Canossa. In addition, this design is meant to create a quiet and aesthetically appealing residential setting, with minimal traffic.
Before urban development, the area that encompasses Canossa was utilized chiefly for agricultural purposes. The development of the neighbourhood finally began in early 1990s, although it was in the early 2000s that the majority of construction took place. As of 2008, the community was still under development and to the north area of 175th Avenue, most of the land area inside the boundaries of the neighbourhood was still being used for agricultural purposes, although this is likely to be developed in future.
The naming of Canossa followed the tradition of naming communities in the area of Castle Down after well-known European castles. Canossa Castle is a well known Italian castle, originally constructed in 940 AD near Bologna in the north part of the country. In the 11th century, the castle was captured by the imperial troops and fell to ruins in 1255. Despite several attempts for restoration through the centuries, the castle still remains in ruins today .
There are few commercial establishments in the community, aside from a couple of small convenience stores. However, one big plus for residents is the proximity of the Castle Downs Park development, which offers a number of shops and entertainment facilities. Bus stations are located in the neighbourhood offering residents easy access to other areas of the city.
