Carruthers saw vast potential in the land for real estate development. Protected by the Carruthers Caveat, the standards maintained in the neighbourhood stated that, with no restrictions to home or lot size, no house costing less than $3,500 could be built in Glenora. It was to prove a very inspired move by Carruthers, for in the same year Edmonton was named as the capital city of Alberta, resulting in a huge influx of professionals moving into the city looking for somewhere to build their family’s homes.
Because of the excellent views of the North Saskathewan River valley, the streetcar service that was built for easy transportation from the neighbourhood to the City of Edmonton, and the better air quality due to the Alberta winds which typically flow from west-to-east, a majority of the local elite resided in the area. It wasn’t long therefore until the neighbourhood earned its reputation as one of the ‘posh’ neighbourhoods in the city. By the year 1909, the Government House of the lieutenant-generals was also constructed, and was finished by 1913, increasing the neighbourhood’s upper class image.
The rich history of Glenora contributes to the many places of interest within the neighbourhood. Besides the wealth of classical historical homes, Glenora also houses the Royal Alberta Museum, while the lieutenant-generals’ Government House has been retained for government receptions and formal dinner parties.
Along Stony Plain Rd, a long road which bisects the center of the neighbourhood from east to west, are a number of recreational facilities. In addition, there are many offices and other services found on the outskirts of Glenora, along 124th street to the west and 142nd street to the east. There are also a number of schools, open spaces, and parks scattered around the neighbourhood, of which, the famous Alexander Circle Park is by far and away the most iconic. Situated around this park are numerous stately houses whose design and concept is believed to have persuaded the city to adopt the ‘garden suburb’ motif, which became a trend in the early 20th century.
