The neighbourhood was named after a man called Dr. Norman L. Terwillegar, who was a well-known surgeon and land owner. Dr. Norman L. Terwillegar was one of the most famous surgeons that Edmonton ever produced, and practised his expertise in medicine from 1912 to 1947. During this time, he became the chief surgeon at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, a position he held for 35 years. In addition, he also became the president of the Canadian Medical Association in the division of Alberta, and served for a while as the president of the Edmonton Academy of Medicine at the same time.
