Inglewood Real Estate Market

Inglewood has quite a history. Back in 1882, the land on which the neighbourhood now stands was owned by two gentlemen; R. Logan, a Scottish-born Hudson Bay Company employee turned into wagon freighter, saw mill operator, and J. Norris Sr., a partner in Norris and Carey, a local merchandising firm. This property, which was situated along St. Albert’s Trail and Edmonton, was mainly used as a campsite for First Nation communities as they did their business in the city.

Today, the most common type of residence in Inglewood is the rented apartment, where apartments are mostly low-rise consisting of only 5 stories or less. The second most common home is the single family dwelling, while a very small percentage of Inglewood’s inhabitants reside in duplexes.

Inglewood Community Amenities

Development of the neighbourhood into a residential area was sparked in 1913 because of the extension of the streetcar line to Alberta Avenue, known as 118 Avenue today, via 124 Street. Since the streetcar provided easy access transportation, Inglewood became a low density neighbourhood until the 1950s. Residential construction technically began a little before WWII, but it was slow and only one out of eight residences were built throughout that period. It was only during the next 35 years that residential construction finally began to flourish, and was finally completed in 1990.

The neighbourhood’s proximity and quick access to recreation and business areas encouraged the development of apartments along arterial roads and commercial corridors. One of the first and largest apartment complexes built in Inglewood, just off Groat Road, is the Bel Air complex, which is said to be one of the finest examples of the 1950s large-scale apartment complex projects in Edmonton. A majority of the shopping centers, like the Westmount Shopping Centre amongst others, and other recreation centers, can be found in the northern area of the neighbourhood. Inglewood also has four schools and several places of worship.
