Strathcona Real Estate Market
Today, the Strathcona neighbourhood is made up mostly of low-rise and high-rise apartments, with low-rise ones being the most common. There are also single family dwellings, as well as a few duplexes and row houses. Most of the structures were built between the years 1971 and 1980. There are also a number of dwellings which were built recently in the early 2000s. Some very old houses that were built before 1946 still stand in Strathcona, especially near Mill Creek. Most of them are well-maintained, but these old homes are slowly being replaced by new infill housing.
The first signs of growth appeared in an area of Whyte Avenue which is now known as Old Strathcona—a historic district which is also a bustling entertainment, arts, and shopping hub. Development continued down other parts of Whyte Avenue from 1908 onwards, accelerated by the establishment of a streetcar line which connected Strathcona and downtown Edmonton by way of 99 Street. It was in 1912 when the city of Strathcona amalgamated with the city of Edmonton.
Strathcona Community Amenities
The subject of Strathcona can be quite confusing to some. There is the City of Strathcona, the old city which ceased to exist when it merged with Edmonton—then there is Old Strathcona, the district which used to be the commercial center of the old City of Strathcona. And finally, there is Strathcona, the residential neighbourhood that takes its name from the old city which it was once a part of. A huge portion of Strathcona is also a part of the Old Strathcona district.
Residents of Strathcona have plenty of outdoor recreation spots nearby such as the North Saskatchewan River Valley and the Mill Creek Ravine. When it comes to shopping and other amenities, the commercial hub of Old Strathcona caters to the community’s needs. Due to its central location, residents of Strathcona also enjoy easy access to downtown Edmonton and other parts of the city.
