The residential area of this mark mainly consists of single detached homes, multiple-unit homes, and apartments accessible to amenities. The community as it is today signifies a huge redevelopment effort carried out by the Canada Lands Company. In the past fifty years, the Canadian Forces Base or CFB in Griesbach was used for housing military personnel. Homes were in form of barracks for single personnel and married quarters for families. This is a neighbourhood where kids went to school, customers purchased gas, and people worked out and played hockey.
Griesbach is named after Maj. Gen. William Antrobus Griesbach, a veteran of both the Boer War and World War II, a lawyer, and the youngest mayor in Edmonton during 1907. From 1917 to 1921, Griesbach served as an MP and was named in 1921 to the Canadian senate.
In the mid-1990s, a decision was made to merge a number of army bases at Lancaster Park in Namao, which lessened activities in Griesbach. Towards the end of 2000, most of the facilities had moved to Namao. Since then, the community began reinventing itself as a non-military residential neighbourhood. As of 2010, development was still ongoing.
Griesbach is bordered by residential communities on all sides and is linked to several main roadways. The plan for Griesbach was to create a well-planned neighbourhood that fit into the existing trees and vegetation. Griesbach has embraced a one-of-a-kind urban experience with the development of parks, community amenities, and a town square.
Amenities offered by Griesbach for recreation include the Moose Family Centre, MSI Metro Sports International, and Dickinsfield Amity House. There is an educational institution located in the community as well, Major General Griesbach School. Shopping and other services are available nearby at North Town Centre and Northgate Centre. Transportation around the city is convenient with several bus stops located in Griesbach.
