The land on which this neighbourhood stands on today was formerly owned by three Hudson Bay employees, and was called River Lots 30, 32 and 34 during that time. No significant developments were made until the McGrath-Holgate Real Estate Company came into the picture and began developing the place in 1910.
Urbanization of this land seemed difficult, since it was situated 3 miles away from the Edmonton centre. In order for residential expansion to commence, representatives of the McGrath-Holgate Real Estate Company needed to negotiate with the city to extend the street car’s reach all the way to the future neighbourhood.
The name given to this community wasn’t derived from a significant individual during the early years, but rather, through a contest offering a fifty-dollar award for anyone who can come up with the best name imaginable.
Being one of the oldest neighbourhoods within Edmonton, the majority of residential homes follow the single-detached home format, wherein most of these units were built by the end of World War II in 1945, and between the years 1946 and 1960. The rest of the inhabitants occupy semi-detached dwellings, and low-rise apartments no taller than five stories.
Within this neighbourhood’s territory is the Highlands Community League – here, a variety of activities are offered, such as sports programs plus crafts, bridge and gardening clubs.
Due to its location, this neighbourhood gives its residents convenient access to an assortment of nearby amenities, such as the following: Rexall Place, Edmonton Northlands, Commonwealth Stadium, and the University of Alberta.
For groceries, food, restaurants, shopping, plus other needs and wants, the Capilano Mall is conveniently located a mere 3.2kms away. Other important amenities within close proximity of Highlands include the Capilano Medical Clinic, Edmonton City Centre (Blatchford Field) Airport, and Cinema City Movies.
