The community of McQueen is named after Rev. G.D. McQueen. He was a pioneer Presbyterian minister who came to Edmonton in 1887. Prior to being called McQueen, this location was known as West Glenora and Huff Estate. The residential construction of this neighbourhood took place towards the end of WWII in the 1960s. About 60% of the residential structures were built in the 1960s. During the 1970s to the 1990s, construction continued. Other residential communities surround the neighbourhood of McQueen on three of its sides and an industrial neighbourhood on one side by its northern boundary.
Similar to other Edmonton communities of the same time, McQueen has a street layout that is patterned after a customized grid pattern. In the 1950s, single family homes were constructed that surrounds a big central site, which consists of four schools and other recreational facilities. There are also a number of low-rise apartments as well as other multi-family homes that are situated by McQueen Road and have a view of the central park and schools. Residents of McQueen are split between owner occupied homes and renter occupied homes.
There are commercial centers situated at the major roadway intersections that surround the neighbourhood. From McQueen, residents have easy access to Westmount Mall and also the industrial district in the northwest part of the city. Another small strip of shops are also situated at the neighbourhood's south east corner. Other notable places in the area include churches, restaurants, hospitals, and other commercial outlets.
Four schools are located in the McQueen community, which include Archbishop MacDonald High School, Edmonton Christian West School, Edmonton Christian High School, and Edmonton Menorah Academy. In the nearby neighbourhood of Woodcroft stands Ross Sheppard High School.
