Interestingly, Lorelei is one of several neighbourhoods in Edmonton that takes its name from a famous European castle. As such, Lorelei was named after one of the oldest castles in Germany, which is located near the town of St.Goarshausen on the River Rhine.
Today, construction has largely been completed. Modern day Lorelei is bounded to the north and west by Castledowns Road, to the east by 97th Street , and to the south by Beaumaris Road and 160th Avenue. Residential construction first began shortly after the WWII but little progress was made thne. It was only during the 1970s that development boomed, and about 59% of all residential units were completed in this time. By 1995, all development and construction was completed in the area.
The housing mix of Lorelei is very diverse. Single detached homes are the most dominant, accounting for more than half of all units at 57%. Roughly one quarter of the homes in the area are row houses, followed by walk up apartments which make up another 10%, then duplexes, which make up roughly 8% of the area's homes.
Amenities wise, the neighbourhood houses two elementary schools, both of which can be found in the center of Lorelei. This promotes easy access for both parents and their children to come and go to school. Nearby the schools are a couple of public parks, which provide residents with ample recreational space. There are pathways around the neighbourhood to promote pedestrian and bicycle travel. Along 108th Street and Castledowns Road you can find a commercial area that includes a shopping center and several smaller businesses.
