Windsor Realty started initial development of Forest Heights in 1911. It is believed that James H. McKinley, the developer’s owner, chose the name for the neighbourhood. In 1913, it was officially declared as part of Edmonton. However, the agricultural use of most of the land in the community was maintained until the 1940s. Development and demand for housing in the area rose following World War II.
Robust development ensued in Forest Heights in the 1950s. By then, it was like other mature suburban communities with a demographic composition that displayed a lower proportion than average. More of its residents then were older than 50 years. Logically, most of the family units have also matured.
Construction of more homes continued in the decades that followed. Residential construction was substantially complete by 1980. Single family houses (mostly located in the quiet interior streets) account for up to 76% of all homes in the neighbourhood. Other types are apartment style condominiums and apartments.
The residential and commercial areas are concentrated along six major roadways in the borders and within the neighbourhood. Wayne Gretzky Drive (75th Street), 84th Street, and 98th Avenue are at the boundaries while 79th Street, 101st Avenue, and 106th Avenue pass through it and provide access to North Edmonton through four valley bridges.
Forest Heights has a street network that combines patterns of grid and modified grid. Residents enjoy easier access to amenities they need. Traveling north through Wayne Gretzky Drive facilitates access to centers within northeast Edmonton, which include Commonwealth Stadium, Rexall Place, Concordia University College, Edmonton Northlands, and Capilano Mall.
There are four schools that are located within Forest Heights. Those are the Forest Heights Elementary School, McNally High School, St. Bride Catholic School, and St. Kevin Junior High School. The neighbourhood is also home to the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton.
