During the 1910s, the Ottewell was called East Glenora and East Edmonton Park. It was initially going to be called Braemar; however, the name Ottewell was chosen for the area to honor the first family who settle in the south of the Northern Saskatchewan River within the area of the Cloverbar during 1881.
The Ottewell family were grain farmers who later established the Ottewell Coal Company. The Ottewell's were also the family who established the Campbell and Ottewell Flour Mills.
The neighbourhood, covers a large number of hectares, offering a variety of amenities. The main commercial mall of the neighbourhood is the Edmonton's Capilano Mall on the northeast boundary of Ottewell. Edmonton's Public Library is just adjacent to the Capilano Mall and provide numerous books. By the southern part of the neighbourhood, residents can access the Ottewell Plaza where they can also find a strip mall, grocery stores, and other shops.
The neighbourhood also has six schools most of which are primary schools, as the town only has one secondary education school.
