The community was named in honor of a man called John Cameron, a famous pioneer and businessman who resided in what is now called Cameron Avenue. He came to the city of Edmonton in 1881 from Winnipeg and set up a number of successful businesses. Later, he became first president of the city’s Board of Trade, and also held the position of the Edmonton School Board’s Chairman. In addition, he was one of the initial Town Council members from 1892 to 1895.
At the time that John Cameron lived here, Cameron Heights was vastly different. Most of the modern developments here took place after 1960, during Edmonton’s construction boom. The plan for this neighbourhood integrates low as well as medium density commercial and residential developments, which are strategically located around parks and other green parts of the community to create a cohesive feel. The design of the neighbourhood incorporates a central park that serves as a main focal point for the community. In addition, there is also an elementary school located here.
Pedestrian walkways are designed throughout the community, allowing residents to easily walk to and from park areas. The most distinct feature of Cameron Heights is the proximity of the North Saskatchewan River Valley and no less than three natural ravine systems; Smith Road Ravine, Cameron Ravine, and Wedgewood Ravine.
The neighbourhood of Cameron Heights was primarily planned as a residential area, however it also contains one commercial site at the main entrance into the community, which is meant to cater to local residents. For those who wish to travel to downtown Edmonton, frequent bus services at the entrance to the community provide a convenient means of transportation.
