The Summerlea neighbourhood has made some changes in recent years to its residential units. More than half of the residential units in Summerlea neighbourhood consist of low rise apartment units. This is due to the fact that after the 1980s, residential developers changed their approach, they no longer wanted to build only single family homes.
The neighbourhood is bounded on the east by 170 Street, the west by 178 Street, the north by 95 Avenue and south by 87 Avenue.
Summerlea's name is used to describe a summertime meadow. The name Summerlea refers to the wide parkland that this neighbourhood offers for all residents and nearby neighbourhoods. Furthermore, the parkland was a good amenity added to the West Edmonton Mall that serves as the main feature of the neighbourhood.
With regards to amenities, the Summerlea neighbourhood has tons. There is a large park within the neighbourhood; aside from that, residents can easily get to the West Edmonton Mall which is located only a few minutes away from most homes and can even be walked to from some homes. From the east boundary of the neighbourhood, residents will be able to reach the Misericordia Community Hospital. The neighbourhood is also located west of 178 Street and east of 170 Street. In the South is 87 Avenue and to the north is 95 avenue.
Summerlea's development was greatly affected by the expansion of the West Edmonton Mall because the commercial establishment occupies most of the land that was supposed to be dedicated to residential units. Although the actual plan was to design the neighbourhood in a similar way nearby neighbourhoods, the expansion of the West Edmonton Mall changed this plan. The mall is considered the largest mall in North America.
