Today, Jamieson Place is dominated by single family dwelling units, accounting for 93% of the household mix, while the remaining residences consist of duplexes and a handful of row houses. Development of the land is still on-going up until the present day, and so this composition may well change in future.
Prior to land development, the area encompassing Jamieson Place was primarily used for agricultural purposes. Development didn’t begin until the 1980s, when construction took off big time, growing to 55% of its present size by the end of the decade. From the 1990s through to the early 2000s, development continued, bringing the neighbourhood to its present size.
Jamieson Place was named after a prominent lawyer and politician named Colonel Frederick Charles Jamieson. Coming from Ontario, where Jamieson was born and educated, he arrived in Edmonton in the year 1895. In 1899 he was admitted to the bar of the Northwest Territories and eventually went on to practice law with A.C. Rutherford, who was the first premier of Alberta. Later in life, Jamieson served in the Boer War before coming home and serving as a member of the Alberta Legislature during the years of 1931 to 1935. Later, he was presented a lifetime achievement award in 1953 by the Edmonton Bar Association.
Amenity wise, Jamieson Place residents enjoy a number of basic services, including the Michael A. Kostek School which was designed and planned by local residents, and the Colonel F.C. Jamieson Park site which is located in the middle of the neighbourhood to provide residents with easy accessibility.
The street network design of Jamieson Place was developed to prevent shortcutting through the neighbourhood via a series of loops and cul-de-sacs. From north to south runs a pipeline corridor which presents the residents of the area with a linear greenway in the west.
