The Thorncliff community mirrors its neighbours, for example, the number of residential units in each hectare matches its neighbours. And like the nearby communities, Thorncliff offers more residential units per hectare than anywhere else in the city. The reason this was done was to cope with the sustained population growth that Edmonton saw in the 1970s. Thorncliff and other neighbourhoods were designed with efficiency in mind, as developers attempted to manage the urban sprawl and preserve the nearby agricultural land.
Thorncliff, like most other Edmonton neighbourhoods, has its own local school, found at the center of the community.
