Nowadays, more than half of the neighbourhood consists of single detached units. Most of the row houses that were built during the 1970s can only be found around the Ormsby Elementary School together with the natural parks and other facilities within the neighbourhood. There are also some low rise apartments that are often rented.
Due to the fact that the development was done in two different decades, there are some variations between the structure of the western part and eastern part of the neighbourhood. All the streets in the western part of the neighbourhood developed using a specific grid pattern.
The name of the neighbourhood came from A. W. Ormsby who pioneered the grid system for avenues and streets' in the city of Edmonton. He was also a superintendent, for 20 years, of the Edmonton's department of electric lights. He also became the commissioner of the city for 2 years.
Residential homes were intentionally located around the central park in the neighbourhood. On the other hand, the eastern part of the neighbourhood has its residential homes intentionally located along loopy roads and aren't located near parks.
The Ormsby Place neighbourhood is surrounded by various neighbourhoods such as Lymburn to the north, Callingwood South to the east, and Jamieson Place and Dechene to the south. Beside the western boundary of the Ormsby Place lies the Anthony Henday Drive which provides quick access to the southern part of the city where the Edmonton International Airport is located. The West Edmonton Mall is also located a short drive north of the neighbourhood.
