There's nothing like watching a live music concert for a band you love, but some people want to see live music in a more intimate setting. This list is for exactly that kind of person, whether you've never been to a huge concert before or you'd simply prefer to see the local talent that hasn't made it to the big stage yet. Here are four live music locations in Edmonton, AB, to find the best live music the city has to offer.
Don't let its size fool you: The Aviary's small space provides a unique, enjoyable atmosphere for its guests. Alberta's best, up-and-coming musicians have often performed at The Aviary, and the location is beloved by those who've been there. This tucked-away venue offers a variety of affordable drinks to purchase, including beer from local breweries and well-loved coffee. Food is available as well, served by experienced and friendly staff members. As a multi-disciplinary venue, The Aviary also celebrates its visual artists: you're bound to see stunning art on the walls while attending a live music performance.
The Starlite Room
The Starlite Room in the heart of downtown Edmonton is the place for people and music of all sorts to come together. This venue has been popular since its establishment in 2004, with two separate levels for guests to choose from: dance on the dance floor, or enjoy drinks and a clear view of the stage from the high-top bar upstairs. For those looking for food before or after the night's show, the recently renovated River City Revival House doesn't even require a reservation to get in. Having a membership is required to watch a show at The Starlite Room, and with a variety of events to see throughout the year, the low price of $5 for a year's membership goes a long way.
The Tequila Cellar
On weekend nights, the beloved El Cortez restaurant opens its doors to The Tequila Cellar, transforming into a live music hotspot. The restaurant's basement comes alive as live bands, as well as the occasional other forms of entertainment, bring energy to the night. This venue has also hosted "secret" shows for big names such as Our Lady Peace, Shawn Hook, and many more since 2014. The schedule for The Tequila Cellar is always full of exciting events, so be sure to look them up on social media to plan your next Saturday night with them.
Blues on Whyte
Blues on Whyte is the place to go for blues, jazz, and R&B lovers across North America. For over 50 years, this venue has brought high-quality live music to Edmonton seven nights a week, and it has hosted some of the biggest names in the business over the years. Music is hosted on the first floor of The Commercial Hotel, and the seats fill up fast every night. Saturdays showcase the Saturday Afternoons Blues Jam session, where new musicians take the stage every 20 minutes to show their talent. Come and hear the music for yourself!
There's live music everywhere in Edmonton, so long as you look in the right places. Visit one of these locations and you might find your new favourite venue.
