Developed in the 1970s, the picturesque Abbottsfield neighbourhood is one of the more modern residential areas in Edmonton, yet its history can actually be traced back to 1882, when the land was owned by one E.F. Carey, owner of the trading firm Norris & Carey, and one of the most prominent businessmen and citizens in the city at that time.
Abbotsfield Neighbourhood History
Abbottsfield remained a rural area until it was swallowed up by the expanding city limits in 1961 following the amalgamation of Edmonton with the town of Beverly, then underwent rapid urbanization at the end of the decade. Originally, the area was thought to be unsuitable for residential construction due to its proximity to chemical plants and the old Beverly landfill site, although this view quickly changed after the site was transformed into what is now Rundle Park.
