Kirkness is a neighbourhood that is dominated by single detached homes. This type of property accounts for 55% of all residential units in the neighbourhood, with the remainder being made up of low-rise apartment buildings (28%), duplexes (9%), and row houses (8%). As Kirk this is one of the more desirable neighbourhoods of the city, a large majority of residences are owner occupied, with only 37% of properties being rented. The population of Kirkness is considered to be fairly mobile, as about 50% of all residents have only lived here for the last five years or less.
Kirkness Neighbourhood Amenities
The area has many great amenities. For example, Kirkness School is considered to be one of the better educational institutions in the city, while the James A, Christianson Park, located at 146 Avenue, is a superb recreational destination. The park was named after the man who founded the oil Kings hockey club and the meteors basketball club. As such, the park contains many sports facilities. It is located in the north of the neighbourhood.
There are not too many commercial facilities in Kirkness, however, there is an Edmonton LRT station in the neighbourhood, providing residents with easy access to the central and south parts of Edmonton, as the line goes past Clareview Station.
Kirkness was named after a man called James Kirkness, who first arrived in Canada, way back in 1866. Kirkness hailed from Scotland, and enjoyed a long and successful career with the Hudson Bay Company until his retirement in 1881.
