Kernohan Community

The land on which Kernohan stands today was annexed to Edmonton City in the 1960s, and by 1972, Kernohan was officially named and incorporated into the Clareview district. Shortly thereafter, residential development in the area began a pace driven largely by the oil-driven economic boom that hit the City of Edmonton. Around half of all homes standing today were built in the 1970s, with the remainder of the homes built in the 1980s and early 1990s.

The most common type of home seen in Kernohan is the single family dwelling, which accounts for 62% of all residences in the neighbourhood. The rest of the neighbourhoods dwellings are a mix of rowhouses (20%), duplexes (12%), and low rise apartments and condominiums (5%). The vast majority of homes in Kernohan are owner occupied, totalling around 89%. The remainder are occupied by renters.

Kernohan Neighbourhood Amenities

There is only one school located within the neighbourhood; the Anne Fitzgerald Catholic elementary school, which is operated by the Edmonton Catholic school system. Adjacent to the school is Kernohan Park, which provides a large recreational area for residents of the neighbourhood. Both the school and the Park are located more or less dead centre in Kernohan, while in the North of the neighbourhood there is a small commercial area catering to the residents.

Kernohan was named after an early pioneer farmer and coal miner, James Kernohan. He and his family came to Alberta from Ontario in the year 1884. James Kernohan established a successful grocery store in the area, which he ran from 1884 to 1899.
