Another product of the post-World War II construction boom that saw Edmonton establish itself as one of Canada’s most dynamic cities, the neighbourhood of York was named after one Annie A. York Secord, a famous local school teacher who moved to Alberta back in 1889. Like the majority of neighbourhoods in this part of Edmonton, most of the dwellings in York are single family homes.
Since the construction boom took hold in Edmonton during the 1960’s, the practice of building single-detached abodes became too impractical since they were deemed to occupy too much land area. The demand for more ‘compact’ residences is what led to the creation of Edmonton’s first condominium complex here in York, back in 1967.
The first fifteen houses were built before 1946, with urbanization reaching its peak during the 1960s. Residential development continued steadily in the following decades, but slowed down as the land neared its developmental completion.
York Neighbourhood Amenities
Bounded by 144 Avenue at the north, 137 Avenue by the south, 50 Street on the east, 66 Street to the west and Manning Drive to the southeast, York is within close proximity to a wide range of commercial establishments, services and institutions. For residents, one of the most important of these is Clareview LRT station and transit, which provides commuters with convenient access to major parts of the city and other locations of interest.
Residents also enjoy quick and easy access to several malls, such as the Londonderry Mall, just 1km away, and the Northgate Centre, which is only 4kms away.
Other places of relative importance include Concordia University College of Alberta, Northeast Community Health Centre, Commonwealth Stadium, Empire Theatres, and the Edmonton City Centre (Blatchford Field) Airport.
