Balwin Community

The intriguing history of Balwin neighbourhood dates back to the early 20th century. Balwin initially was part of an area in North Edmonton and was formerly known as Packington hence many of the locals were employed in the neighboring meat packing plants. It was only in 1912 that Balwin was proclaimed a part of Edmonton.

The blueprint of this older neighbourhood is signified in the diversity of distinctive land cultivations in this area. The partition of land replicates the difference in years in which land division took place. In 1950, the western section of the Balwin area was branched off and streets were characterized by a typical curvilinear style. In the years around World War I, the eastern section was divided and the streets had a distinctive and popular lattice style appearance. The name of this momentous neighbourhood originates from the joint names of two former landowners, Luke Winterburn and Frank Luke.
