Featuring one of Edmonton’s earliest inner town neighbourhoods, Cromdale, which means “crooked valley”, has now become something of a haven for Edmonton’s residents. Until recently, Cromdale was little more than fields and pastures primarily used for agriculture. It wasn’t until the 1960s that residential development took hold here, but once the builders moved in, the neighbourhood sprung up quickly to become one of the city’s most desirable places to live.
Development was sparked by the extension of the old streetcar line which heads down to the the city’s main business area, along Jasper Avenue, Kinnaird Street and Pine Avenue. As soon as the streetcar line was extended, developers pounced on an area that was viewed as some of the most prime real estate in Edmonton, given its proximity to the city center.
Cromdale advocates a forward-thinking policy of revitalization that aims to promote an enhanced lifestyle through restoration of the neighbourhood. Thus, individuals, firms, and local organizations in the neighbourhood determine various goals and action plans that are intended to foster a feeling of the community and enhance resident’s standard of living. Both residents and local businesses cooperate closely with the City of Edmonton to breathe new vitality into the area. Various programs centered on the restoration and repair of streets, sidewalks and streetlights have been launched, while other projects are focused on restoring physical infrastructure, while creating a lively, sustainable neighbourhood.
Cromdale Neighbourhood Amenities
The neighbourhood enjoys excellent amenities, with a number of good schools located in the community. In addition, libraries, malls and hospitals can be accessed easily via the nearby LRT stations. The peculiar form of the Kinnard Ravine is one of its main attractions. One of Edmonton’s starkest natural features, the ravine, begins in the North Saskatchewan River valley, bisecting the central part of the community before ending at the CNR/LRT right-of-way at Cromdale’s Northwestern border. Much of the ravine is covered in natural woodland, providing a nice outdoor space for residents.
