Homesteader, along with two other neighbourhoods were part of the Hermitage plan area. Back in 1875, Canon William Newton, an Anglican minister moved to this part of Edmonton and started calling it Hermitage. Primarily used for agricultural cultivation, Homesteader became part of the City of Edmonton in 1961. The first residential developments in the area took place during the years 1946 and 1960, and began with the creation of only twenty-five houses. Urbanization reached its peak between the years 1971 and 1980. After the 1980s the construction of homes significantly decreased because there wasn’t that much available land to construct on. As for the rest of the residents, they live in semi-detached homes and low-rise apartments standing less than five stories tall.
Homesteader consists of the following main roads: Kennedale Ravine, Yellowhead Trail and 50 Street. The most notable facility, which can be found within Homesteader is the multipurpose education and recreation site.
Homesteader Neighbourhood Amenities
Even though, Homesteader lacks facilities in its residential area, this town is still situated near a variety of other recreational facilities, many of which are more than capable at providing everything a resident may need or want. First and foremost, there’s the Londonderry Mall, which is only 3.1 km northwest, and the Capilano Mall, which is approximately 5.5 km to the south of the town.
Other close places of interest include the Northeast Community Health Centre (2km), Clareview Family Medical Clinic (1.2km), Empire Theatres (1.5km), and the Edmonton City Centre (Blatchford Field) Airport (7.8km).
Homesteader School Information
