Before World War I, many of the areas of Edmonton Alberta were divided into areas to be developed. One of the areas that were developed at the time was the Virginia Park neighbourhood. There is not much information about when Virginia Park was first established, but the name Virginia Park can be credited to the Virginia Park Greenhouse that opened up in the middle of the neighbourhood in 1912.
The border that has been established for this neighbourhood includes the northern edge of 112th street, the eastern edge of Wayne Gretzky Drive, Ada Drive in the South and 76th street in the west. The fact that the neighbourhood is so old will explain why there is a mix of older and newer buildings in the neighbourhood. Residents will be able to find buildings that have the classic architectural features of the early 1900’s and modern buildings that represent the designs of the late 20th century.
Most of the homes in the current neighbourhood were built after World War II. These homes were built to provide housing for the returning servicemen. About 1 out of every 5 homes predates this period. One of the unique features in some of the older neighbourhoods is the low percentage of single-family homes. In Virginia Park they only make up about half of the homes. A large portion of the buildings is small low-rise apartment buildings, which aren’t over 5 stories high. The area is serviced by the light rail transit system and offers its residents many different parks and other recreational facilities.
Virginia Park Neighbourhood Amenities
Some of the notable features of Virginia Park are Concordia University College and the beautiful Borden Park.
