Eaux Claires, meaning ‘Clear Waters’, is a fairly modern and quiet residential neighbourhood, located in the north of Edmonton. The area, which these days blends into several surrounding neighbourhoods, is defined by 167th Avenue to the north, 153rd Avenue to the south, 97th Street to the east and 82nd Street to the west.
Despite being a new neighbourhood, which only saw construction begin in the late 1990s, the plans for construction of Eaux Claires actually began as far back as the early 1980s, when a neighbourhood structure plan was first developed by Homestead Holdings Ltd., in conjunction with Mackenzie Spencer Associates. This plan was adopted by the local council in 1983, although construction didn’t begin until much later.
The objectives outlined for Eaux Claires in its original plans included the creation of a quiet, safe neighbourhood with safe, hierarchal road systems in order to encourage young families to move into the area, and that’s exactly what has been occurred. Road access to the area is very easy, with minimal traffic problems experienced in the neighbourhood, which has proven to be one of the main attractions for residents.
Eaux Claires Neighbourhood Amenities
For recreation, a small, central park is located in the western part of the neighbourhood, close by to a small primary school, which is attended by many of the resident’s children. In addition, there are a couple of man-made lakes, at Eaux Claire’s northern and southern boundaries. There are few shops in the area, such as a couple of mid-size convenience stores; however, road links to downtown Edmonton, via the 97th Street, ensure easy access to many of the city’s major shopping malls.
