Blue Quill Estates is named after Cree Chief Blue Quill who was a frequent trader in Edmonton in the later portion of the 1890s. This is to keep with the tradition of naming neighbourhoods within the Kaskitayo Outline Plan after Aboriginal Leaders within Kaskitayo to honor and remember them. Cree Chief Blue Quill was from the Saddle Lake Indian Reserve. While the majority of development began in the early 1970s it continued into the 1980s, and slowly upwards into the early 2000s.
Presently, the neighbourhood includes a large variety of houses from row house to apartments. They are all located along the major access route within the neighbourhood. You can find more spacious single unit homes on much larger lots looking over the Whitemud Creek Ravine. The Blue Quill Estates residential planned lot showcases an example of having attractive larger homes on smaller lots, utilizing the land more appropriately.
The neighbourhood is extremely recreational. Whitemud Creek Ravine is situated to the west and Blackmud Creek Ravine is to the south of Blue Quill Estates and offers all season outdoor activities in a more natural setting. There are a large number of pathways placed throughout the neighbourhood, which helps provide easier access to the ravines through bicycle and pedestrian traffic. Currently, the population within the neighbourhood is only 1,360 residents.
Residents can enjoy many other amenities such as golfing, tennis, badminton, volleyball, and fitness centers in the adjoining neighbourhood of Westbrook Estates at the Derrick Golf and Winter Club. In addition they have access to outdoor ski trails and an outdoor ice rink during the cooler seasons.
