The neighbourhood is bounded on all four sides by major roadways; 51 Avenue to the North, 111 Street to the East, Queen Elizabeth II highway to the South, and 1 to 2 Street to the West. As such, residents of Malmo Plains can enjoy convenient access to other parts of the city, most especially the destinations in the southern part of Edmonton stop.

While there are no commercial sites located within Malmo Plains, there are plenty of shopping and entertainment venues located within easy reach, including Southgate Mall, which is no more than 10 to 20 min away on foot from any part of the neighbourhood. In addition, residents can benefit from the south LRT extension that runs along 111 Street at the neighbourhood’s Eastern boundary.

The name Malmo Plains has a rather interesting story behind it – the land on which the neighbourhood stands today once belonged to the University of Alberta research farm, and so for a long time it was used for agricultural purposes. The soil in the neighbourhood was identified as “Malmo” loam, of which and apparently quite rare type of soil. When the time came to name the new neighbourhood, the Dean of Agriculture at the University of Alberta, a man called Fred Bently, suggested naming it after the soil. 

Malmo Plains School Information

One of the most persuasive of fees is the educational institutions located within the area. Malmo plains features two elementary schools howls within the central school and Park site, while in the Western part of the neighbourhood is Michener Park, which is the married student multi-family complex of the University of Alberta. Meanwhile, just to the North of the neighbourhood is the University of Alberta South campus and research farm.
