Today, Queen Alexandra is one of the most convenient places to live in within Edmonton. It’s a mixed residential and commercial area with a wonderful variety of features. Rented apartments are the most common type of dwelling in this neighbourhood. Most of the apartments are in low-rise buildings. There are also single family dwellings and a small number of duplexes.
The neighbourhood is named after the wife of King Edward VII of England. Residential development in this area began shortly after the establishment of the City of Strathcona in 1899. Before World War I, Strathcona enjoyed tremendous growth, with most of the area sitting north of University Avenue to Whyte Avenue seeing rapid development. From the 1940s onwards, development stretched toward the southern end of University Avenue.
There are plenty of recreation facilities in the neighbourhood such as the Southside Athletic Grounds and the Strathcona Leisure Centre—and just east of Queen Alexandra is the nearby Mill Creek Ravine, a favorite spot among locals for outdoor activities.
For shopping and entertainment, simply head north. As mentioned previously, the historic district of Old Strathcona (which Whyte Avenue is part of) is one of Edmonton’s commercial and cultural hotspots—theatres, shops, and restaurants abound.
Indeed, Queen Alexandra is one of Edmonton’s most vibrant neighbourhoods. It is diverse, rich in history, and conveniently close to the historic district of Old Strathcona.
Queen Alexandra has five schools, four of them run by the Edmonton Public School System and one operated by the Edmonton Catholic School System. The University of Alberta is also just a 7-minute drive away.
