Named after Chief Skyrattler of the Winterburn band, this neighbourhood is bounded on the north by 23 Avenue, on the west and south west by Blackmud Creek, and on the east by 111 Street.
Today, Skyrattler is a sprawling residential neighbourhood with curvilinear streets. Most of the dwellings are row houses and low-rise apartments. There are also single family dwellings and a few duplexes. The western and southern portions of Skyrattler are especially scenic since they sit close to the natural beauty of the Blackmud Creek Ravine.
There is a small shopping area at Saddleback Road and 23 Avenue. But if locals are planning on a serious shopping spree, Canada’s largest retail centre, South Edmonton Common, is only a ten-minute drive away. Here, residents will find a wide variety of grocery stores, boutiques, restaurants, electronics outlets, and more.
Skyrattler is actually centered on a combination school and park site. The school board decided that some of the lands reserved for school purposes were unused and therefore considered surplus. In 2008, the building envelope of the school site was rezoned. It gave way to the construction of low-density housing.
Close to some of Canada’s best shopping centers and sitting next to the lush setting of Blackmud Creek, Skyrattler is a charming and picturesque neighbourhood ideal for raising a young family.
Some of the existing schools in the neighbourhood are the Concordia High School and the South Edmonton campus of the CDI College. There are also plenty of nearby schools outside Skyrattler, such as the George P. Nicholson Elementary School and the Taylor College and Seminary.
