As for the types of housing in this real estate market, most of the dwellings are fairly uniform – the neighbourhood lacks the charm of some of Edmonton’s older communities, however the upside is that almost all of the homes here incorporate modern designs. Carter Crest offers a balanced mix of medium and low density residential housing, with virtually all of these being single-detached homes.
Development at Carter Crest is notable for having taken place extremely rapidly. At the end of the 1970s, the area was primarily used for agriculture, but fast-forward to the mid 1990s and residential development here was practically complete. The neighbourhood was planned in such a way that it would fit in impeccably with the other surrounding residential neighbourhoods and also to offer an appealing community for those residing there.
The neighbourhood was named in honor of Robert I. Carter (1858-1931). He held position as a Canadian government agent and informed Americans on their immigration possibilities to Canada. After a number of trips to the City of Edmonton from where he resided in Ohio, he bought a farm located in what is now known as Terwillegar Park, before naming it Riverside Farm. In 1910, Carter transferred to Strathcona; however his sons went on to farm the area up until 1946. Carter was quite active in Strathcona’s political scene, serving on the council for rural residents, acting as the Conservation Association of Strathcona’s president, and finally, serving in the Masonic Order.
One of the features of Carter Crest is that it’s highly accessible, being connected to major highways on all four sides. Even so, the neighbourhood is free from any traffic problems thanks to its clever design. The network of cul-de-sacs inside is meant to reduce the negative effects of traffic and works very well here.
For recreation, Robert Carter Park is situated in the northeast section of the neighbourhood and offers a large open space to residents. The neighbourhood features an extensive pathway system that offers efficient bicycle and pedestrian access all around the community. Although there isn’t any commercial space inside Carter Crest, accessibility to Terwillegar Drive offers residents easy access to amenities in the nearby areas.
